Burano ~ In Living Color

Post 2 of our trip to Venice.

Post 1: Venice ~ La Serenissima.

Saturday, 23 December

Morning on Canal di Cannaregio

Got up and hustled over to Fondamente Nove to catch the 9:10 vaporetto 12, the ferry out to the outer islands for a morning trip to Burano. We wanted to beat the crowds which were expected to be bigger as the day wore on.

We went ashore at Mazzorbo and walked along its canal and a bigger channel to a bridge to Burano.

Still can't resist a playground.

Morning on the channel ~

Lest you think these gondolas are reserved for tourists.

Crossed the footbridge to Burano, into a world of color.

Historically Burano is an old fishing village. It is said that fishermen began painting their houses in vibrant colors so that they could identify their abodes more easily, especially when they returned in foggy weather.

The bell tower of Parrocchia de San Martin Vescovo (Parish of St. Martin Bishop) is among the numerous leaning towers that can be found in Italy.

Who needs Pisa?

It's probably no surprise that the sandy soil so near to the water wouldn't keep the tower upright. Are we above partaking in the most cheesy tourist photo op?

Nope.

Had to do it.

Museo del Merletto (Lace Museum) is housed in the former Scuola Merletti (Lace School)

Burano is also known for its lace. Karl and I left the boys in the sun while we visited the museum.

Saw examples of lace through the various periods.

As well as the actual work stations where ladies used to create the goods.

Of course, looking at these pictures I was distracted by a niggling thought: With comfier chairs, this could be a great set up for a breastfeeding class.

Just sayin'

Back out to the rainbow world.

Got a quick lunch on Galuppi Square. Had to follow up with a local treat, of course.

The store sold all kinds of Italian delights.

Dark alleys can't be scary when they vibrate with color, right?

This house isn't planning to miss Christmas.

I was off snapping some of these shots while Karl and the boys headed toward the vaporetto station where we would rendezvous for the 13.30 return passage. They were there as passengers disembarked from the boat.

There definitely were a lot more people in that load than there had been in the morning. Nevertheless, one stood out:

Guy with the Green Jacket, fresh off the 12:10 vaporetto!

GGJ-spotting #2.

Off we went, back to Venice for some afternoon fun.

  1. Were there tourists on that last boat? Or am I missing something?

    1. Yes, there was a boatful, apparently, but I got to the ferry terminal after they all unloaded. I didn't actually see Guy in the Green Jacket, but everyone else in the family did.

    2. No need to be sorry. My brain is a little soft this morning....
