Carnival!

In the lead up to Masopust (Lent, or "goodbye to meat"), Prague hosted the Eurocarnival and Festival of Guggemusic Ensembles.

I don't really understand the name either, but (according to that web site), "Guggemusic ensembles and Narrengruppen are carnival groups with masks typical for German speaking countries and beautiful costume dance groups of Venetian style. Every year they visit different European cities."

The last Saturday in January — an atmospherically grey and misty day — was jolted awake with a parade of color and music from Malá Strana to Old Town and beyond.

I spent several hours following the bands, enjoying their eclectic musical renditions of everything from "Sweet Caroline" to "You Give Love a Bad Name" to "The Lion Sleeps."

I have a few videos but the files are too big to upload. If I can figure out a way to edit them down, I'll get them up.

In the meantime, enjoy the pics!

  1. That ... is an interesting and fabulous tradition. Was one of the bands doing a Game of Thrones theme?

    1. Maybe? It wasn't obvious in the moment (that is, they didn't do anything else to show GOT theme). Are you thinking of the ones with the fur and suede capes? And with the brown and white face paint? They certainly look GOT inspired.
